I saw a job post titled “Claude Code Operator.”
The pay was around 3-8 lakh, depending on the experience.
Requirement was simple. They need a software engineer who knows how to code to operate Claude Code. They explicitly said, “You don’t have to write code. You need to know how to talk to an AI to complete coding tasks and verify their output.” Simple enough.
We will see a lot of these jobs popping up in the future everywhere, and to me it makes sense, even I feel that’s the right direction to move.
We have commoditized the code. We don’t need anyone to write code. The only issue I see with job posts like this is that we are basically saying because you don’t have to write code, you are going to work less, and that means you are going to get paid less.
The thing is, coding was never the job. It was always ownership, judgement, and human intelligence. It was always about what solution we are going to choose for this specific problem so we can minimise the risks.
If we apply the same logic to a doctor, we are basically saying because ChatGPT can do half of your diagnosis now, we’re going to pay you less for the same judgement. No doctor would accept that.
So I feel, yes, commoditize the code. Let Claude Code, Cursor, or whatever handle the code. But don’t commoditize the judgment. That’s the part that was always worth paying for.
That’s the part that should be paid more for now, not less.
