I believe everybody has something to contribute. If every day you feel you are making efforts to improve something or do a better job and nothing seems to work, I think it’s time for a change. An engineer at heart will not do a good job in marketing, and vice versa.
Work on things you believe in, things that align with your vision of how the world should work. When you work on something that inspires you, your productivity goes through the roof. Work on something you don’t like, and you’ll just be staring at the clock when the day ends.
That doesn’t mean the work you love is not going to be hard, but for the same reasons, any important thing you are trying to do is going to be hard we need inspiration. On top of that, if you don’t believe the work you do is important, you’re going to have a very hard time accomplishing anything.
Make the job easy for you. Be honest and true to yourself. Ask yourself what you want to do and why it’s important. You need that long-term vision to pick yourself up every day when you are tired, lost, and don’t want to put in another minute of work.
Don’t grind. Being miserable doesn’t help anybody. It doesn’t help us, and it doesn’t help our team. On the other hand, if we do the work we truly believe in, we’ll inspire ourselves and others to go beyond their limits each and every day.
Inspire, don’t grind.
